Start here to learn how to select the correct tankless water heater for your home.

Fuel Type = Natural Gas, Propane, Electric, Portable Propane tank for outdoor showers.

Option A. If you have Natural Gas on your street start with that.

Option B. If Electricity cost more than 8 cent per KW Propane is an excellent alternative to natural gas.

Option C. If Electricity is less that 8 cent an electric tankless water heater is for you.

GPM = Gallons per minute the large the heaters GPM rating the more showers and sinks you can run.

a.      The Average shower is = 2 ½ GPM’s

b.      The Average sink is = 1 ½ GPM’s

c.      The Average dishwasher is = 1 GPM

d.      Total of 5 GPM at 120°F

Temperature Rise = (40° F rise) what does this mean?

a.      Example = New York has a entering water temperature of 50 °F in the winter This is the water temperature when only the cold water is running.  Water heaters are installed with a leaving temperature of 120 °F

The temperature rise is simply

 120°F Leaving

– 50°F Entering

  70 °F Temp rise

Note form tankless water heater reviews:

I posted the tankless water heaters GPM’s at 40 °F to 45 °F temperature rise. This means if your homes cold water is coming out at 50°F plus the 40°F (temp rise) you will have 90 °F hot water at the published GPM’s. In order to heat the water to the desired 120°F the leaving water temperature could be slowed down to 4 ½ GPM on some models? All tankless water heaters will do this automatically.

What happens when one shower is running?

The average shower head put out 2 ½ gallon per minute. This is a mixture of cold and hot water; let’s say you like the water really hot that’s 2 GPM of hot and ½ GPM of cold water. The tankless water heater is putting out 120°F hot water at 2.0 GPM’s.

What happens when three showers are running at the same time?

Once again the average shower head put out 2 ½ gallon per minute. This is a mixture of cold and hot water; let’s say you like the water really hot that’s 2 GPM of hot and ½ GPM of cold water.

    3   Showers

 + 2   GPM’s per shower

    5   GPM’s Total

What happens if you run the hot water in the sink, when all 3 showers are running?  You guessed it all 3 showers get colder at the same time. The GPM’s are over taking the heaters ability to heat the water to 120°F.

Inclosing selecting your tankless water heater is basic math.  On average most of us know how many shower and tubs we need to run in the morning.  If you have to 2 bathrooms going every morning a 7 ½ GPM tankless water heater will get the job done. Simply add all the shower, tubs, sinks and washing machines you need to run at once. If your total hot water usage is over 12 GPM at one time a standard tankless water heater isn’t going to cut it.  If you can stage your hot water needs throughout the day a tankless water heater is an excellent way to save money and energy.

Typical Hot Water Flow Rates GPM (Gallons per Minute Calculation Chart)
Dishwasher 0.5 – 1.0 GPM
Bathroom Sink 0.5 – 1.5 GPM
Kitchen Sink 1.5 – 2.0 GPM
Utility Sink 1.5 – 2.0 GPM
Washing Machine 2.0 – 2.5 GPM
Shower 1.5 – 2.5 GPM
Body Shower 1.75-2.0 GPM Each
Bath Tub 2.5 – 4.0 GPM
Jacuzzi or Roman Soaker Tub 4.0-5.0 GPM
